We shut down the electrical system to take a trip, and when we came back and powered it back up, the Alpine 7982 head units weren’t working.  All three have functioning backlights, but the LCD display isn’t working.  You can hear a little white noise from the speakers when it’s powered on, but that’s it.  We tried removing the face plate and putting it back on.

If there were only one head unit on the bus and it was doing this, I would think the head unit went bad.  It’s just strange that all three of them went out at the same time.  The equalizer in the front overhead cabinet seems to be fully functional.  Is there anything I should check before replacing one of them?  Thanks for any help!

Liberty powered mine down and up recently and it took me about 1.5 hours to figure out how to get my alpine stereo/nav back on line.  Don’t give up yet…can’t believe all would go down at once.  BTW, on mine, there is a special sequence to follow and a hidden toggle switch to make the video monitor work while driving.   You might want to talk to Liberty.

If I remember, Jeff will probably jump in, but there is a PIA sequence you have to go through toggling a switch, pumping the brake pedal, keeping your right arm up in the air and tapping your foot 3 times and repeating, there is no place like home.

I couldn’t resist, but someone will have the sequence.

try the default code of 0100 – it probably thinks it in anti theft mode.
Chances are it is not the standard code, but this is worth a shot.  This is sorta typical for when it looses power like it was removed from the vehicle. (No power to the unit at all)

I havent seen seen one of those in years – is it really one of the 3 disc in dash players?

Ha! Tom, I had my left arm up… I knew I was doing something wrong!

We’ll have to figure out the magic sequence before putting the code in. The display won’t turn on to enter it.  Liberty keeps the code on file.  They are the 3-disk in-dash units.

I had an inability to get a previous Alpine to work because they have a feature in which the loss of power is seen as a potential theft. They automatically go into shut down and require a password to restore them to service.

I called Alpine customer service and the problem was solved quickly by having the representative walk me through step by step until the Alpine was working again. Quick and easy and I did not have to put my arm up in the air.

I stumbled onto this manual for a similar model:

      https://www.manualslib.com/manual/940544/Alpine-3da-7987.html?page=16#manual

I am going to try the reset button behind the face plate, and if that doesn’t work, we’ll call Alpine.

tom, it’s not a video unit with the emergency brake override he is trying to fix- it is a in dash 3 disc changer in security mode caused by a loss of power. (Ant-theft mode). There is a 4 digit code to unlock it so it will operate at all.

here is the closest thing I found.
      https://www.manualslib.com/manual/619907/Alpine-Cda-7998r.html?page=34#manual

the above page 34 describes how to set a code, but also mentions the default code of 0000.  Once the wrong code has been tried 3 times it will go into security mode.  – I would call liberty if they were factory installed. – also the code could have been placed in your books somewhere – check the actual alpine manuals for a written In code.

The unit isnt to hard to remove remove from the slide out cage if you need to send it somewhere (like alpine) to unlock it.  The 90’s were full of radio thefts and this was the deterrent – put the code in wrong 3 times and it wasn’t sellable for the thief who stole it.   Eclipse had the bright idea to code theirs with a cd. Then of course you had to know that cd the rest of its existence. We had plenty of customers who forgot, had service and then would lock them up until we would have to send them out with proof of purchase to have them unlocked.  Fun times.

Since you have 3, I would expect the code is the same, but be careful entering in a code more than 3 times on each one.  I can’t recall if they go into full lock down.  – I’ll ask one of my guys who was an installer for a alpine dealer for 15 years.

After trying what the manual said, I ended up having to call Alpine as Jon suggested.  They walked me through unlocking the head unit.

With power off, remove the face plate.  Press the reset button to the right of the face plate connector with a paper clip.  Put the face plate back on and press Power.  Then it will read CODE very dimly, we shined a flashlight at it to see better.  Press the Func button to begin entering the code; it will show 0000.  Using the skip forward/backward buttons to select a digit and the volume up/down to change it, I entered the factory code of 0100.  Press Tuner to enter it, and it is unlocked.  Then I pressed and held the Illum button to turn on the backlight of the display.  I probably could have done that sooner, but I didn’t want to chance it.

great – the older radios had a lot of steps once you used your “3 tries” to get back to a spot in which you could enter the code.  Glad they could walk you through it.

I knew the factory codes where 0000 or 0100 – tricky part is when someone changes it.  – make sure to document it well- and in more than one place in case someone tosses the book by mistake.   Back then we had to factory restore on a regular basis as owners wouldn’t have any idea what they chose as a code.

I recommend end to store it in your phone as well – in a password keeper program if you use one. (On top of written)

      Mike,

I nearly fell out of my chair when I read your post above. I kept thinking of some old jokes about how many engineers does it take to change a light bulb? I’m sure you have heard them before. Well, a question literally jumped into my mind when your post said the Alpine unit was in “Ant Theft mode.” Here is a question, “Just how many ants are needed to carry a Prevost away from a Picnic? I know it was just a typo but it sure made me LOL!
