Hey everyone, Im getting my hubs ready for the trip to Kerrville this weekend. After checking the oil on the front wheels, I noticed some anti-tamper screws on the rear. They look like pan head screws with a 5/32 hex head and a post in the center, making it impossible to use an Allen wrench. Any advice on how to remove these screws? Is there a specific tool for this, or should I drill out the post? Thanks in advance! Tony and Jenny 2008 Marathon D/S XLII 2017 RAM 1500 4×4

You can find specialized screwdrivers for those fasteners at a decent tool store like Sears Craftsman or Snap-on. Drilling out the nib might be tricky since the screw is likely made of hard steel, and you could damage the hex in the process. Once you manage to remove it, consider replacing it with a standard screw for easier future access.

Those screws are left-hand thread special screws, so you’ll need an appropriate size Allen wrench with a hole in the middle. If you can get them out before your trip, consider just tossing them; they tend to be more hassle than they’re worth. I’ve never had anyone tamper with my caps, and those security screws just add frustration when you can’t find the right tool. Just remember: if you end up drilling, the drill’s motion might actually loosen them since theyre left-hand threads!

Head over to your local Advance or AutoZone and grab a stainless license plate screw kit. It should come with the security screws and include the Allen wrench that fits your hub cap screws. Easy fix!

Thanks for the tips, everyone. I’ll hit up a couple of tool stores in the morning to find the right tool before considering drilling. Appreciate the advice! Tony and Jenny Conder Abilene, Texas 2008 Marathon D/S XLII 2017 RAM 1500 4×4

If needed, take an impression with clay or gum to get the correct sze.
