I started considering the gearbox that powers the cooling fan and noticed there was no way to check the oil level or drain it. I called Prevost, and they mentioned they made a dipstick from a piece of wire, so I created one and found the oil level was half full.
Thinking it might be a good idea to drain and replace the oil, I looked for a drain plug but couldn’t find one. It seems they installed the gearbox on a riser without any drainage option, which probably means it hadn’t been serviced since installation. I ended up using a suction method to remove the oil.
While working on that, I thought about removing the riser, cutting a hole in it, and adding an extension tube for a proper drain. This modification should make servicing the gearbox much easier.
If you’re using a 200 series gearbox made by Superior, you might want to consider making this change!
