There a verius sensors on the engine that if become faulty will shut down the engine. My local dd told me some

computers can be programed to not shut down the engine but just give you a warning light. Would you reprogram

your computer if you could? And if you did would you still keep on hand the sensors anyway? Your thoughts  Rick

I would never disconnect them for normal operations.  The whole reason they shut down the engine is to protect it.  I could see disconnecting one if you needed to limp off the road a very short distance.  I am surprised that any DD dealer would even offer to do it due to the liability they could incur.

      Ricik,

The most common failed sensors are these:

      Oil Pressure                  23532797

      Air. Oil, Fuel Temp         23518092

      Coolant                         23515251

I bought them all as spares a few years ago for less than 200.00. Then sold them when I went back to the 8V, wish I still had them now.

There are only three reasons your engines computer will initiate a shutdown.

      Low coolant level
      High coolant temperature
      Low oil pressure.

If a sensor should fail and shut down is imminent you can over ride the shut down to get to a safe stopping spot. To keep you going however you either need to replace the sensor (assuming the problem is only a failed sensor and not a real problem) or in some cases fool the computer. In the event of low coolant level which is a fairly common fault if there is sufficient coolant in the header tank then just installing a jumper between the connector’s pins clears the fault code.

I carry spare sensors, but a call to DD will get information on how to correct the problem temporarily (perhaps with a jumper) to get you back on the road. Even though you may get a CEL and SEL you can easily determine if the problem is real or a sensor failure by either verifying it at the gauges (front and rear) or looking at coolant level.

An orange check engine light will not shut you down. It will and should get your attention and it will require you to have the fault code investigated. If you get the red stop engine light, your immediate response has to be to find a safe spot because unless you over ride it you are about to lose the engine power.

Truck……good to have a list so that you could go to Napa and just get one of each, thanks , but are those the same for the vaunted 8V92T of which I have a nice one?

      Rodger,

They may not be the same part number but you also have sensors. DD will have to confirm if they are the same.

To all…….there are a lot of things that will disable our coaches besides these sensors so do not interpret a discussion about sensors to suggest those are the only potential problems. Things like the throttle position sensor or the turbo boost sensor will enable your engine to run, but likely not above an idle. There just has to be a limit to how big a supply of spare parts we need to carry.

Don’t forget about the ‘override switch’ on the dash which gives you a limited override on any shutdown.
