I have a 2000 H3-45 VIP.  I have only owned it for about one month.  Had overheating problems after a new fan clutch was installed, found to be a tripped breaker and then a shorted out relay.  I leave the shop, and notice my tachometer started jumping from 0 to 1000 rpm and back just up and down. Two miles later the speedometer goes to 0 and the odometer stops.  This is our first Prevost and we are leaving on Sunday for a 4000 mile trip.  It is 6pm on Friday Memorial Day Weekend so the only people I have to ask are you.  I have already learned a lot from this site so I am hoping one of you have any clue what is going on.  Thanks

It could be a ECM problem do u have any fault codes on dash or do you have a code reader ?? You can read the codes from the dash and get the number of the code by how many times it flashes then look up number to tell you what it is

Some times the wire plug get dirt in them or corrosion , you can clean plugs then try it again

I went out and turned the coach on and everything is fine, which makes me more concerned.  Let me get the codes and let you know. Thank you for your time on this.

Generally speaking when an electrical problem appears to have fixed itself it is an indication of a bad connection.

If you know what connections were disturbed or mioght have been disturbed tightening them or opening and closing the connector to clean the contacts might be all that is required.

Jon what is your opinion on dielectric grease?  When you open and close those connection during diagnostic due diligence (probably plug and unplug) is that a good time put put a touch of dielectric grease on the connections?

I have never used it. I do know that components whose connectors may be subject to corrosion are often coated with dielectric grease, such as truck tail light connectors.

Problem solved I think but I am trying to keep my cool right now.  Speedometer, tach working fine, now the awning won’t come out.  So I pull a panel where the wiring goes and a dead baby mouse fell out.   My neighbor has a chicken coop just on the other side of the fence.  Now to find out how much damage they have done and kill any others.

Resolved, as in the problem never came back?  Or as in you found a problem?

We had the exact same problem.  The temps started climbing on a recent trip, so we pulled over to find that the fan was free-wheeling (clutch not engaged) and the engine bay was very hot.  While looking it over, the fan kicked on.  We didn’t have a problem the rest of the trip.  Back at home, we did a little troubleshooting with the low-speed fan relay by taking an old relay and bending pin 85 out to force the fan on, and it worked.  We replaced the relay anyway with a new spare from Prevost and went out for a test drive.  The fan worked fine, but the speedo stoped working on the way out.  We pulled into a parking lot and checked for blown breakers, which there were none.  Then on the way back, the tach stopped working too.  There was no warning light on the dash.

After dinner, we checked again and they were both still inop.  The next morning, the tach works but the speedo does not.  These are the VDO gauges with the analog odometer.

(Now that I’m thinking about it again, I wonder if it was the high speed relay that caused the problem.  If the high speed relay was inop, would that disengage the fan completely when it goes to high, or would it still stay in low speed?)

OUCH!  We have seen some extensive rodent damage over the years that explains a lot of issues, both intermittent and sustained.  I would get the coach up on ramps and thoroughly checkout chassis especially harnessing, air line tubing, etc to see if you find evidence of anything further.  The little buggers tend to start with easily accessible areas like chassis, then with colder temps, move indoors to more difficult to inspect areas….and they love the taste of wire insulation!
