I’ve been researching the topic that’s been circulating lately, and here’s what I found:

On the 2004 and possibly some 2005 engines, Detroit Diesel quickly installed variable finned turbos to comply with EGR regulations. Unfortunately, these early turbos haven’t performed well in the field. However, Detroit Diesel is not issuing a recall because that could jeopardize their business. Instead, if you have a bus with a stamped date of 2004 (note that Prevost uses the engine date as the chassis build date), and you’re experiencing issues such as a) loss of power and b) excessive smoke, you might be eligible for a replacement turbo at a Detroit Diesel dealer—under the condition that you keep it confidential.

This information isn’t publicly available, and they’re trying to manage the situation discreetly. Lew would know what I mean by that.

So, there you have it. This issue doesn’t affect other model years.

      Have a great day!

I often spend time with the mechanics and engineers at the converters, blending in as if I belong there. It’s amazing what they’ll share with me.

I’ve also found that some of the CAD engineers at the converters are invaluable sources of information since they’re responsible for implementing Prevost-related changes. I’ve picked up a few tricks along the way!

      *snort, snort.*
