My Webasto has two small ‘throwaway’ fuel filters. An AquaHot technician suggested replacing these with a ‘spin-on’ canister filter.

Has anyone encountered issues with this modification or know if it’s necessary?

As long as the micron rating is the same or better, it shouldn’t matter which type of filter you use. Personally, I’d choose whichever is easier to change and source replacement filters for. My system has a canister-style filter that’s difficult to replace and poorly designed. The only reason I didn’t replace the whole unit last time was that I had a spare— the only one that came with the coach.

      Just my two cents.

Switch to the filter type that’s easiest to find. Mine originally had an obscure mini filter that was hard to locate in an emergency. I discovered this on a cold winter night when the Webasto stopped working due to a clogged filter. Not only did I spend a chilly night without heat, but I also wasted a day of my vacation trying to find a replacement. Eventually, I swapped it out for a more common type.

The filters you currently have include:

      • 33053
      • Napa Gold 3053
      • Canister type replacement elements: WIX 33583, Napa Gold 3583, or the original Racor R12-T.

The “upgrade” suggested by the Aqua Hot technician is a Racor fuel filter with a replaceable canister and a visible water bowl at the bottom. Many converters switched to this specific fuel filter/separator unit in the 2000s for its improved water separation and filtration capabilities. The numbers listed above are for your current filters.

I haven’t changed my Webasto fuel filter in several years. Before anyone criticizes me for that, consider a few points. First, the filter is the same size as the one used on my generator’s primary filter, and it can handle a lot of fuel before it becomes clogged—much more than a typical filter. However, if I do get a bad batch of fuel, it will still perform its job effectively.

I don’t have a way to track the hours of use on the Webasto yet, but it’s used less frequently than the generator. I replace the generator filter every 150 to 200 hours, and I estimate the generator uses about twice the fuel per hour compared to the Webasto (just a guess).

If I notice any contaminants in the engine Racor filter bowl, I replace every filter, including the Webasto’s.

Thanks for the comments fellas, the replacement filter AquaHot is suggesting is a Gerber[sp]. He sells both the Racor and the Gerber and his opinion is the Gerber is better and less $$.

It’s called a Garbar fuel filter which is use in many CC as well as other manufactures.
