How about a part number or link for that door handle?  I may attempt to change mine proactively.

When I get back to the bus, I’ll see if I have a part number from Prevost on it.  I will say the tech fiddled with the inter workings for the better part of an hour to get it exactly the way he wanted it..  I watched the entire time and tested his results each time, per his request, so I know he was not just racking up the bill!

The part alone was $472 from Prevost.  Probably could get it off the web for 1/2 that.

Jon, you could add to the list of rants, the ‘bumper covers’ on the H . What a masterful price of crap, they don’t fit, change shape with heat from the sun or the engine and generally are nowhere near “Ultimate Class”

I suspect with this site and the number of members we can devlop a very accurate list of service issues that can be used to help all of us anticipate issues and deal with them on our terms instead of having no choice in the matter such as the CAC and door latch. Both will cause great inconvenience to say nothing of the financial impact.

The cosmetic issues such as the bumper cladding and the mirrors are less troubling as far as impacting a trip, but are likely even more annoying because they are easily resolved.

We have the numbers, how to we leverage our membership to influence Prevost to deal with issues they must be aware of?

I replace my door latch every two years no matter what, I always carry a spare one with me easy to change out, but hard if you do not have one,  guys remember that if you can open the drivers side door on the Xll if you can not reach the keys for the ignition the passenger toll window will not open just turn the four way flashers on and power will be at the window switch on the dash or over by the door

Wow! $500 for the latch and $500 for labor? That hurts. The one on my XL looks the same. Mine failed in January 2009. Once I had it apart I realized it had been extensively repaired previously and needed to be replaced. I was going through Nashville in a couple of weeks so I made sure Prevost had one and bought it there.

The latch was less than $200 (It may not be the same latch) then and I replaced it in their parking lot. It took my very unhandy self about 90 minutes including figuring it out, adjusting and putting the panel back in place.

      Tom/Bill,

I’d love to see about getting it off of the web for 1/2 of that price.  Do you think that because it looks like a Ford piece?  I wonder how we would cross reference numbers.

If he only spent an hour on it, how did they rack up that labor charge?

Removing all the door panels, yes, more than one to get to the handle, and then installing and trouble shooting, putting the door back together, oh and drilling the door bell hole..  and breaks.  Did I mention they take breaks?  lots of breaks?

Could anyone post a picture of what is breaking on the door handles of the XL’s.

Seems like it would just be a metallurgy problem because with no more stress than a door handle gets you would think it would never break.

      Whats breaking exactly.

      Buddy,

I tried to get a pic of the “Before” but the service guy had the old removed and tossed before I could get out and stap a photo. But the issue I think is that the handle was put together with some inferior type of rivet or weld that does not hold up.  Over the years, it fails.  Or that’s how I understood it.  I’m a computer guy, not a repair guy so I may be totally off base.  (in my work terms, the code broke!)

To all, In my past life as a locksmith, it seems all “Paddle type”handels fail, because the operators use too much “pull” when opening the door.
They tend to use one motion to release the latch and continue to pull to open the door.
I have found that if you use two steps to open the door
      -first release the latch-
then use a little less pull to open the door , the life of the handel is greatly increased.

If I recall, on the XL’s, you can remove the little round metal plug and then get at the latch to open.

I did not drill a new hole for the doorbell. I eliminated it since we had not used it one time. That saved a few minutes.

thanks Jon, the dark brown weld is what failed on our handle.  Prevost Nashville said this is the common failure and its been replaced with a solid part with no welds is what they tell me.

      New handle is great!
